Shady Spot: The Importance Of Tree Care

2 Tips to Follow When Deciding How Much to Trim Your Trees

Here are some tips to follow when deciding how much of your tree should be trimmed by an arborist.

1. How long the branches need to be to provide privacy

If you like the privacy that the tree you're planning to trim provides, then you must keep this in mind when deciding how much of its branches the arborist should trim. Whilst the effects of the tree trimming will be temporary, you should still ensure that the arborist doesn't trim them to the point where the tree doesn't provide any privacy for several months.

If for example, there is a particular cluster of branches on the tree that obscures your neighbour's view of your garden, then you could ask the arborist to be a bit more conservative when trimming this cluster and to then trim more of the tree's other branches. This will ensure you still have some privacy after they're finished, but that you'll also notice the improvement in the tree's health that will come with trimming it.

Before giving the arborist the all-clear to trim this cluster to a certain length, you should let them trim one of the branches in this area and check that it's just long enough to continue obscuring your neighbour's view. This will ensure that they remove the right amount off of each branch the first time they cut them which, in turn, will mean they won't have to re-trim them after you've examined their work.

2. How often you'd like to use this service

You'll also need to think about how often you're planning to use this tree trimming service. For example, if in the above-mentioned situation, your priority was using the tree to maintain your privacy, and you decided to only have the trees' branches trimmed a little bit, then you would have to get them trimmed more often. You may also prefer to take the little-and-often approach if you enjoy the beauty of the long and leafy branches and are concerned that trimming off too much of each one might make the tree look less appealing.

In contrast, if the tree isn't used for the provision of shade or privacy, and you can only afford to use this service once a year (or even less frequently than this), then you should have the arborist trim the branches as much as they can without compromising the tree's health so that these branches will take quite a long time to reach their current length again.
